Paediatric occupational therapy

Gaining autonomy to participate more confidently in everyday life

Getting dressed. Eating. Playing. Writing. Moving. Getting organised. Taking part at school. Tolerating certain stimuli.

These are everyday activities that may seem simple, but for some children they can be a real challenge.

Paediatric occupational therapy supports children who need help developing the skills to participate more independently and confidently in their daily activities.

What do we do in sessions?

Through play, movement and activities meaningful to the child, we work on an individual basis.

It is not simply about practising a skill over and over again.

We try to understand what is making that activity difficult and look for strategies, experiences and adaptations to help the child progress.

Always respecting their pace, their needs and their interests.

What can we work on?

  • Everyday autonomy

Getting dressed, eating, hygiene, organisation and other daily activities.

  • Fine motor and manipulative skills

Hand coordination and the skills needed to handle objects and materials.

  • Motor coordination and planning

Balance, coordination and organisation of movement.

  • Sensory processing and regulation

Supporting needs related to the way the child processes and responds to sensory stimuli.

  • Attention, planning and organisation

Strategies that facilitate participation in and completion of different activities.

  • Participation across different settings

Helping them participate more independently at home, at school and in other spaces.

  • Confidence and independence

Encouraging the child to discover everything they can do and feel more secure in their abilities.

Small challenges that may appear in everyday life

Sometimes a family does not think directly of "occupational therapy".

They simply notice that their child finds it very hard to get dressed, rejects certain textures, struggles with some manipulative activities, needs a great deal of support with routines or finds certain everyday situations especially difficult.

An assessment helps us understand these needs better.

If you would like to know more, we have prepared an article explaining it in greater detail: Paediatric occupational therapy: what it is, what it addresses and when to consult.
